Hello again my dear reader,
I can’t believe how different this post is to what I had expected to be writing, based on the predictions on Friday. While we were anticipating a wash-out, the weekend just gone was actually quite the opposite. It rained quite heavily on Saturday morning but then it was almost completely dry and warm for the rest of the weekend.
On Saturday, the sun was up and it was warm (over 21 C, 70 F) so it was a no-brainer what we were going to do: go for a walk with Athena to Horseshoe Bay Beach and back, take a cigar with me to smoke when we have a break, then return for some exercise and enjoy a late lunch or early dinner at home. This indeed we did. The walk took probably 90 minutes and in the middle of this I had the cigar I had earmarked for the weekend, a Cohiba from Chatham House. It was bliss.
Then we got back and I remembered that I had only a few episodes left of “The Wire” to watch. I got these from a mate in Prague when I was ill last year. Since I had to be in bed a lot, I needed something to watch. I had always wanted to get to the end of the final season but it’s hard to do when there is so much else to do. But, with only a few episodes left and with Jitka in love with her new toy (Kobo e-reader from the recent trip to New York) I had the time required to do it. So, I poured myself a Bloody Mary (except the Lea & Perrins Wostershire sauce which is a little hard to find here), made some pop corn and sat down to watch. I then poured another and another while enjoying the first episodes of the final season. At some point, I looked at the time and was shocked to find that it was after 2 in the morning and the bottle of Vodka was almost empty. So, I shuffled off to sleep and looked forward to another day of watching “The Wire” on Sunday.
Sunday came and I felt the after-effects of the Bloody Mary feast of the night before. I still managed to go out with Jitka and Athena to do this walk, including smoking another cigar. We saw a sand crocodile too, some youngsters made it and I took a photo. You can see it on sports tracker, if you click on the link for the walk. I took a video on my phone of Athena playing in the water but I have to figure out how to put it on the blog before I can share it. We then came back and I got to watch the end of “The Wire”. I must say that I was quite impressed in the end. I can now say that it’s one of the best TV series I have ever seen. Folks, if you know other series like that, let me know, I’d like to watch them.
This reminds me, Jitka and I started watching “Mad Men”, a slightly bizarre series about the Ad Men of Madison Avenue in New York. It’s so weird, takes place in the last 60s or early 70s and is incredibly politically incorrect. Men are constantly harassing women and it’s completely acceptable. Also, it takes place back in the days when smoking was allowed in indoor places. So, it feels partly like a documentary and partly as a TV series. Still, while I’m shocked that Jitka likes it (since it’s so offensive to women) I still like the fact that we can watch it together. I just have to get her away from new boyfriend (Kobo) and we’ll be fine.
All this thinking of “The Wire” and the circumstances in which I got introduced to it, making use of the cigar cutter that the guys at work got me as a leaving present from Prague and the fact that I’m using the USB disk that they also gave me made me reminisce a little about my time in Prague. I thought about the move to Bermuda, the new house and different lifestyle and Jitka and I spent some time evaluating our decisions. I thought of what our weekend would have been like if we were still in Prague and how much better Athena’s leg is in the warmth of Bermuda compared to the cold of Prague. These thoughts made me appreciate the guys I used to work with, they gave me some of the most thoughtful presents I have ever received so it’s clear that they cared, I must have touched some people at that job. But, at the same time, I much prefer my predicament at the moment, living in a country that I at least understand the language, enjoying the weather which will only improve until the summer and actually enjoying my work too. I know I’ve kept the work off-blog for now and I will continue to do so for a while but the important thing is that I’m enjoying it, at least so far.
Anyway, before the post gets too long, I should go. Please check back soon for more juicy Bermuda stories
